Owner Self-Purchase Items
LED Strip & Aluminium Profile Guide
(LED Strip / Drivers / Aluminium Profile / Diffuser / End Caps)
LED profile systems often require preparation before installation. If the owner self-purchases any of the below, please follow this guide strictly to avoid delays, re-trips, and installation issues.
1) Important Clarification: LED Strip / Driver / Profile Are Not Included Unless Stated
Unless clearly stated in your quotation:
- LED strips are not included
- LED drivers are not included
- Aluminium LED profiles (and accessories) are not included
2) Two Options: Use Our Supplier vs Owner Self-Purchase
Option A — Purchase via By Design / Our Recommended Supplier (Smoothest Option)
If LED strip/profile is purchased through By Design (in-house) or our recommended suppliers, we can manage the full flow, including:
- Confirmation of suitable LED and profile type
- Quantity planning (including allowances where needed)
- Driver sizing and matching to LED strip requirements
- Coordination on cutting plan to minimise visible gaps
- Delivery coordination, checking, and sorting
- Labelling by area and driver pairing
- Handling wrong/short deliveries (exchange / re-delivery / follow-ups)
- Warranty coordination with supplier (where applicable)
Result: Faster installation, fewer site disruptions, clearer accountability.
Option B — Owner Self-Purchase
If you choose to self-purchase, we can install based on what is provided, but:
- Owner is responsible for correct selection, completeness, and compatibility
- Owner manages supplier mistakes and warranty claims
- Wrong/short/missing items may lead to additional charges and rescheduling
3) What By Design Will Provide (Indicative Plan for Your Seller Consultation)
By Design will provide an indicative LED layout plan showing:
- where LED is intended (locations)
- the recommended profile type for each location (e.g., slim surface, recessed, corner, cove)
- an estimated run length for each location (for discussion and budgeting)
Important: This plan is used for you to consult your LED seller/lighting consultant. The seller’s final shop drawing and cutting plan will be treated as the final reference for fabrication, quantities, joints, and accessories.
4) Owner Responsibilities (Mandatory Requirements)
A) Final LED/Profile Shop Drawing (Required — From Your Seller/Consultant)
Before installation, the Owner must obtain and provide the seller/consultant’s final shop drawing, confirming:
- final length for each location
- maximum continuous run length per piece (to minimise visible gaps)
- joint locations (if any)
- end details (end cap / return / corner)
- driver location and access plan (if applicable)
- cable requirement (2-core / 3-core) if required by the LED system
Important: If 3-core cabling is required for your LED system (common for certain dimming/control setups), please confirm early so we can plan wiring provisions before closing works.
B) Physical Sample Set (Required — Send to Factory)
Please provide a sample set for confirmation (send to our factory address):
- aluminium profile + diffuser
- intended LED strip sample (short piece is sufficient)
This allows us to verify fit and installation method.
C) Delivery Locations (Factory vs Job Site)
To avoid confusion:
✅ Send to our factory address (we will provide the address):
- aluminium profiles
- diffusers
- end caps / clips / profile accessories
- sample set (profile + diffuser + LED strip sample)
✅ Send to the job site (for installation):
- full roll(s) of LED strip
- LED drivers
- connectors / wiring / accessories required for final installation
Why this is required: Profiles often need preparation and matching. Drivers/strips are installed on site and are better delivered directly to the unit for final works.
5) Labelling Requirement (Mandatory for Owner Self-Purchase)
Please ensure your seller labels items clearly by:
- room/area (e.g., Living / Kitchen / MBR)
- type (profile / diffuser / LED strip / driver)
- quantity per area
- driver pairing (which driver supports which LED run), if applicable
If items arrive unlabelled, installation may be delayed and/or additional coordination time may be chargeable.
6) Quantity Planning & “Counting” (Owner + Supplier Scope)
For owner self-purchase, the owner should use our indicative plan and coordinate directly with the LED seller/lighting consultant to confirm:
- total LED strip quantity (including allowance for wastage)
- profile lengths and cutting plan (to minimise gaps)
- connectors, end caps, clips and accessories required
- driver quantity and specification (capacity and matching)
- whether 2-core or 3-core cabling is required, and the connection method
Important: By Design does not do:
- exact quantity counting for owner purchase
- BOM verification with the seller
- driver sizing, matching, or compatibility confirmation
These fall under the scope of the lighting supplier / lighting consultant. Final quantities and cutting plan should follow the seller’s final shop drawing.
7) Driver & Compatibility Notes (Owner Self-Purchase)
Owner/supplier must confirm:
- LED voltage system (12V/24V etc.)
- driver compatibility and sufficient capacity
- dimming compatibility (if applicable)
- access to driver for future servicing (do not seal drivers in inaccessible areas)
If compatibility is not confirmed, issues such as flicker, buzzing, dimming instability, uneven brightness, or early failure are handled between owner and supplier.
8) Re-Trips & Rework (Common Issues)
Re-trip charges apply if:
- items arrive short/wrong/missing
- accessories are incomplete (end caps/clips/connectors)
- cutting plan results in missing pieces (cannot complete full run)
- driver location is not accessible and requires rework
- installation cannot be completed in the planned slot
Re-installation due to wrong delivery or later change request will be treated as a VO (chargeable).
9) Seller Return Window / Scheduling Limitation
Our schedule is planned in advance. We are not able to commit to installation within a specific number of days to meet seller return/warranty deadlines (e.g., online platform return windows).
If an urgent installation is requested and we can accommodate via special arrangement/overtime, additional charges may apply.
10) Warranty Clarification
- Product warranty: between owner and supplier/manufacturer
- Installation workmanship warranty: By Design covers installation-related issues only (e.g., mounting and wiring connection faults)
Quick Examples (Common Situations)
- Example 1 (Gaps): Profile cut into multiple shorter pieces → visible joints/gaps appear → not an installation defect.
- Example 2 (Driver access): Driver placed above sealed ceiling with no access → future replacement requires opening works → chargeable.
- Example 3 (Short delivery): LED strip delivered short → partial install → second visit needed → re-trip applies.
